We'll see if anyone catches the shout-out.

PS: The shout-out involves the mobile fur, and it's a reference to James White's "Sector General" series. James White's imagination never heard the phrase "special effects budget"; the alien races he describes are REALLY alien.

The Kelgians are one such race. They're described as being much like caterpillars, but covered with a beautiful coat of long, flowing, silvery fur. The Kelgian speech organs are deficient in emotional expressiveness, so instead, they emote with their fur, the movements of which are controlled by a completely involuntary subconscious reflex, and which form a complex and complete visual vocabulary.

The translation devices used by the setting tend to produce a flat translation devoid of inflection or emotive overtones anyway, so it can be difficult for a person of one species to grasp the full context of another being's statement to begin with. Interacting with the Kelgians is extra-interesting, because even generations after their first contacts with other races, they don't really understand concepts like "lying" or "diplomacy". They will say exactly what they mean, with total honesty, at all times, because to another Kelgian, the emotional context is blatantly obvious and impossible to hide or control. They come across as incredibly blunt and rude to those who haven't interacted with them before; they won't try to sugarcoat anything or bullshit you, because they don't even realize that's a thing.

I very highly recommend "Sector General", incidentally. It's pretty unique in being a medical mystery series IN SPACE. (Also, it's noteworthy, at least to me, that James White was a pacifist--he was born in the late 1920s and lived in Belfast most of his life; it's probably no surprise that he grew to sincerely abhor violence--and yet was NOT preachy as fuck about it. In fact, one of his point-of-view characters is a somewhat holier-than-thou doctor right up until Character Development occurs in a magnificent way.)

It can get a little jarring to read the collected editions now and then because White originally wrote individual short stories, and it shows; there's a fair amount of repetition of basic facts about the setting. Still, it's well worth a read.

I would like to encounter something that can only emote with mobile fur…that would be neat.
Centcomm 27th May 2014, 12:58 PM edit delete reply

that would be neat I agree !
Sheela 27th May 2014, 1:15 PM edit delete reply

Those are called cats.
Vivocateur 27th May 2014, 2:12 PM edit delete reply

My experience with cats suggests that they have numerous other means of emoting at their disposal: meowing, walking on my face at 3:00 am ect...

...one day there will be a reckoning cat...one day...
Centcomm 28th May 2014, 6:45 PM edit delete reply

LOL ah the eternal battle of human vs cat.. just give up now :D

Gali wants to give herself an ulcer. Can she even get an ulcer?
mjkj 27th May 2014, 4:29 AM edit delete reply

I doubt it - but she might find a way...

Centcomm 27th May 2014, 1:01 PM edit delete reply

She can actually - She has a organic stomach it processes food and drink for her organic parts :D
anonymous coward 28th May 2014, 5:14 AM edit delete reply
Medical apocrypha: The actual cause of ulcers is Helicobacter Pylori, a parasitic bacteria species that happily lives in your stomach acid and makes holes in your stomach lining. Stress is what doctors used to think caused it.
Centcomm 28th May 2014, 6:45 PM edit delete reply

ah - good point :D
Tokyo Rose 29th May 2014, 6:23 PM edit delete reply

True. Stress can't drill a hole itself, but it CAN exacerbate the discomfort of an existing ulcer by increasing the amount of stomach acid present, IIRC.
cattservant 27th May 2014, 1:19 AM edit delete reply

Not going to divert her from her fancy anxiety,
She's spent too much time getting it nice and shiny!

I like Edict. He amuses me. I can just imagine all his processors overloaded with all the rapid input by Gali but anyway after a bit of computing he knows what she is talking about. I guess I feel like Edict in some situations with my significant other ;-)
Centcomm 27th May 2014, 1:01 PM edit delete reply

LOL hes very .. logical :D
Sheela 27th May 2014, 1:18 PM edit delete reply

Well, his logical calculations are spot on in this one ... anyone with the techlevel of moving black holes, don't need to sit back and snipe at you, they can just waltz up to your planet and blow it apart if they want to.

The fact that they're sitting back and throwing thoughts at them, is telling. It's like a human trying to make a parrot say "Hello", endlessly frustrating for the parrot, but with enough repetitions, it might learn the word.
Centcomm 28th May 2014, 6:44 PM edit delete reply

pretty much :D
Tokyo Rose 29th May 2014, 6:25 PM edit delete reply

In my experience, trying to make a parrot say anything is an exercise in human futility. The little feathery bastard will pick up phrases all by himself, and you'd better hope he doesn't pick up SOME of the ones you're sure to use due to his behavior >_<

(Among other things, my macaw says "good bird". I call him out on the latter a lot.)

What if...
What if they lay eggs in us, then they hatch, then their babies eat us?!!
Centcomm 27th May 2014, 1:03 PM edit delete reply

AHHH!
Sheela 27th May 2014, 1:20 PM edit delete reply

I've read that story somewhere.
mjkj 27th May 2014, 4:26 AM edit delete reply

Wow, so much worrying. Poor Galina.

*hugs her*

It seems that Galina has watched/read too much Alien and science fiction lately.

Well, I like how Edict is chiming in and disproving her worries with logic.

I am glad he is there for Gali.

Centcomm 27th May 2014, 1:04 PM edit delete reply

well think about it .. how many sci fi story's end with a GOOD note ! especially when things are massively unknown
Stormwind13 27th May 2014, 5:23 PM edit delete reply

I know the answer to that one, CentComm... Not ENOUGH! :-D
Weiser 27th May 2014, 5:43 AM edit delete reply

What a splendid scene layout!
Centcomm 27th May 2014, 1:08 PM edit delete reply

thank you very much!
Stormwind13 27th May 2014, 7:13 AM edit delete reply

Well, right off the top of my head Galina seems to have watched things like To Serve Man, Alien (any of them in the series), possibly even Skyline.

Edit - And I didn't forget it, but I ran out of time finding links, V: The Series. :-D And (try as we might) we CAN'T forget, Battlefield: Earth

At least they aren't facing The Galactic League's First Contact Team run by Leader Idow! Now those were some Illegal Aliens! :-D
Centcomm 27th May 2014, 1:08 PM edit delete reply

i think shes seen them all :P
velvetsanity 27th May 2014, 8:26 AM edit delete reply

Pre-mission jitters!

I don't think I've read/seen/whatever that you're giving a shout out to
Centcomm 27th May 2014, 1:09 PM edit delete reply

highlander55 27th May 2014, 8:29 AM edit delete reply

Centcomm 27th May 2014, 1:09 PM edit delete reply

Tokyo Rose 29th May 2014, 6:26 PM edit delete reply

Nope. Also, huh?
Dragonrider 27th May 2014, 8:32 AM edit delete reply

Self doubt, what part of human doesn't she show?
Centcomm 27th May 2014, 1:10 PM edit delete reply

um.. none? :D
Stormwind13 27th May 2014, 5:27 PM edit delete reply

Galina can't reproduce, Dragonrider; otherwise, she is as human as anyone. And MORE human than some (Looking at Doctor Dickface). :-D
highlander55 27th May 2014, 8:25 PM edit delete reply

@Storm.. True the factory's not there but the playground is.
Centcomm 28th May 2014, 6:43 PM edit delete reply
